Genesis 3:20-24

20 And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.
21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
23 Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

When God put Adam and Eve in the Garden, He told them not to eat of the Fruit of Knowledge of Good and Evil. But, there was another tree in there that they had not eaten of, yet. It was the Tree of Life. If they ate from it, they would still live forever. So, God had Adam and Eve banned from the Garden to prevent this from happening.

God said that man had become "AS" one of them, to be intelligence creatures - to know good from evil. Meaning, man could no longer be called "innocent beings". God is still supreme. But, with that kind of intelligence, and an eternal life, man could wreak havoc in the world. God did not want that.

God gave us the Garden to tend and to keep it. Then, He put us back where he made us from - the earth, from whence we came - to till it and make provision for our needs until the day that we ultimately die and return to the same earth.

God is merciful. He wanted us to live with Him forever, to have nothing but good in our lives, but man failed to honor His command. Being the merciful God He is though, God made a way for us to do just that! He sent Jesus.

Jesus said:

John 14:6

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

He referred to Himself as "the vine", and us as "the branches", (John 15:5) and "the bread of life" (John 6:35)

With Jesus, we have the opportunity to one day eat of the Tree; but, first, we must accept the consequences of our disobedience.
