17 But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

I've been "church'n" today. Listening to God's Word and what He has to say.
God gives us all gifts. Not all of us are called to be a youth pastor, or sweep the church after everyone leaves. Some of us are called to be the hands and feet of God right where we are.
Maybe you saw that pregnant girl on the street corner who has nowhere to go, and doesn't know how she is going to make it until her next meal. Instead of judging her for all the reasons you can think of for being there, why not approach her, get to know her, find out the truth, see if she is ready for a hand up? That extra bedroom you now have since your little girl went off to college could be there for a reason. Instead of selling that big old house just because you don't like the room, try filling those rooms up with God's love. Maybe your little girl was just the training you needed. Now, there is opportunity for more.
Perhaps you don't have the room. But, you have a car. And, you have the time. That homeless veteran who needs a ride to the VA clinic, sure would thank you. Maybe he needs helps getting his prescriptions filled.
Or, maybe you made a big casserole last night and only ate half of it. There is a homeless camp just down the rode with a few people in it that sure wouldn't turn down a home-cooked meal.
How about those old clothes that you don't wear anymore? There is a girl down the street who lives in an old house who is struggling to pay the bills, and winter is coming. I'm sure she would appreciate that old jacket you can't wear anymore...or those dishes you were thinking about giving to the Salvation Army.
I'm not knocking the Sally or Goodwill, but the money they make off your old stuff doesn't fill the immediate needs of that single father who is struggling to raise his baby girl alone when he can't find a decent job that will cover his childcare expenses. He could sure use that swing set your kids grew out of -- or their old clothes, for that matter.
There are lots of ways to be the hands and feet of Jesus. Especially here, in Texarkana. How often do you look around and say, "Lord, give me an opportunity."
Perhaps you see a need that you can't fill, but you know someone who can. Do you leave that needy person alone because you can't fill it and hope they find the help they need? Or do you talk with them and take them by the hand and lead them to the person who can?
I'm just saying.
Sometimes, we are called to be the hands and feet of Jesus right here, right now. Not just on Sunday. Not just at the church house.
You ARE the church. YOU are the only Jesus some of these people will ever see.
Be what you are called to be!

Abide
The word abide, in every instance used in the Bible, means "to stay".
John 15
3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.
For the past few weeks, I've learned, more deeply, what that meant. More importantly, I've learned the consequences of "not abiding".
"Stay in me, and I in you," said Jesus. This means to have Jesus permeate your life: the music you listen to, the purpose you wake up for, your goals, your thoughts, your prayers, how you look at the world around you, how you look at the world to come -- everything about your life should have Jesus in it.
For the past few years I've listened to nothing but Christian music. I've went to church every time the doors opened. I went about my daily business not asking what God can do for me, but for what I can do for Him today.
Then, I got several personal blows in my life that sent my heart reeling. Though I did not question my faith, I know I felt angry and hurt. For weeks, I stopped listening to Christian music. I stopped "moving". I just "existed".
I continued to read and contemplate the Book of Job. I grasped at the strings of my faith, refusing the ropes in my "anger".
I went through the motions, and I never outwardly denied my God, or His power, but my heart was bitter.
A couple of years ago, I had an experience that was similar but not as deep with-in me. It was enough to realize that I needed help. So, I went to a local minister and asked about it.
I was told that a relationship has its ups and downs, and with God, it isn't any different. When you commit yourself to someone, you don't stop loving them when they don't meet YOUR expectations. And, since love is an ACTION and not an EMOTION, you don't stop doing it, in spite of how you feel.
The proper response is to ask God to change your "want to".
Prayer.
I have failed so miserably.
Today, I picked up the headphones, plugged into Pandora radio, and listened to Lauren Diagle and Jason Crabb, and all of those other greats who praise the Lord with their music.
I watched inspirational movies.
I prayed, in spite of how I felt.
And, now I realize that, after weeks of feeling secluded, I should have done that to begin with.

I realize that I have not been very fruitful with my inspiration or my reaching out lately. The branch, though still on the vine, hasn't been very fruitful, and looking at the next verse, it is scary.

What good is a branch that doesn't bear fruit?
Today, I praise God. I feel the veil of anger lifting. I trust. I say "Hallelujah, Anyhow!"
And, I feel better.

Did you get the message?
Did you get the message?
You know, if anyone ever had a reason to be angry and rebellious, it was Jesus Christ. He KNEW the hearts of men. He saw the murders and the rapes and the destruction of mankind. He could have chosen, as a man, to question the Father who sent Him to die for such an ungrateful, angry, sinful and rebellious people.
Instead, as God, He let his love rule over His emotions. He had a message to share. He had hope to give. He had love to spread. He focused on what was to come rather than the here and now. He tried to teach us to do the same.
And, if that meant He had to let an angry, rebellious and sinful crowd torture Him and put Him on a cross, then so be it. It was worth it for what we would learn from it.
Did you get the message? Or, are you still angry, questioning God's love to the point of rebellion, and sinful without remorse?
He didn't come to stop the murders and the rapes and the sins that abound. He came to give hope to the murderer for forgiveness, that if he turns away from his sin, he could have peace, love and understanding in eternity. He came to give hope to the thief, that if he would turn from his sin, God would freely give him riches in Glory. He came to give hope to the rapist, that if he turned from his sin, God would give him a desire to serve and please rather than take and pillage, with peace in his heart. God would take away the anger, the hurt and the feelings of vengeance and replace it with joy, love and forgiveness that would last for all of eternity. He died for the gunman who shoots up churches and schools, pleading with him to repent, before someone else takes the chance He gives him away for eternity.
Sure, God could snap His fingers and make it all go away right now...but then you would never get the opportunity to know Him as your Friend, rather than your master.
The choice is yours.

Broken Praise
Today my study was in Job Chapter 11
Sometimes we suffer. It's inevitable. It's going to happen.
Maybe you find yourself depressed, or ill, or alone, or overwhelmed. No matter what the suffering is about, you will always find well-meaning friends who try to help you, but end up making you feel worse than you already do.
Perhaps that is part of the process.
God wants you to stand on your own feet in front of Him. He wants the relationship you have with Him to be personal, not commune. In a myriad of personal experiences the commune inevitably grows.
You know your pain better than anyone else -- except God. And, trust is the issue.
Do you trust God to do what is best for you?
The Bible calls us to endure suffering. Endure. If we can endure until the end with the Praise of God still on our lips, we shall be saved.
Job
Chapter 11
1 Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said,
2 Should not the multitude of words be answered? and should a man full of talk be justified?
3 Should thy lies make men hold their peace? and when thou mockest, shall no man make thee ashamed?
4 For thou hast said, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in thine eyes.
5 But oh that God would speak, and open his lips against thee;
6 And that he would shew thee the secrets of wisdom, that they are double to that which is! Know therefore that God exacteth of thee less than thine iniquity deserveth.
7 Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?
8 It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know?
9 The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.
10 If he cut off, and shut up, or gather together, then who can hinder him?
11 For he knoweth vain men: he seeth wickedness also; will he not then consider it?
12 For vain man would be wise, though man be born like a wild ass's colt.
13 If thou prepare thine heart, and stretch out thine hands toward him;
14 If iniquity be in thine hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles.
15 For then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot; yea, thou shalt be stedfast, and shalt not fear:
16 Because thou shalt forget thy misery, and remember it as waters that pass away:
17 And thine age shall be clearer than the noonday; thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning.
18 And thou shalt be secure, because there is hope; yea, thou shalt dig about thee, and thou shalt take thy rest in safety.
19 Also thou shalt lie down, and none shall make thee afraid; yea, many shall make suit unto thee.
20 But the eyes of the wicked shall fail, and they shall not escape, and their hope shall be as the giving up of the ghost.

Anger, Jealousy, Sin and Terror: The beginning of Joseph's legacy
Read Genesis Chapter 37
One day, all of the sons of Jacob (except Benjamin, of course, he was still too young) went out to feed the sheep in Shechem (as the land was still called at that time). Joseph stayed behind with his father.
Israel (as God had had renamed Jacob, meaning "Triumphant with God") asked Joseph, "Hey, aren't your brothers in Shechem today?" Then, he told Joseph, "Why don't you go see how they are doing for me?"
When Joseph got to Shechem, the brothers were not there. He wandered around looking for them until a man saw him and told him, "I heard them talking about going to Dothan. You might look there." So, Joseph went to Dothan.
The brothers saw him coming from a distance. "Look, the Dreamer is coming," they sneered. "Let's kill him and throw him in a pit. We'll just tell Dad that some wild animal got him. What will become of the Dreamer then?!" But Reuben, the oldest brother, was more protective.
"No, don't kill him. Just throw him into a pit." Reuben knew he couldn't "fight the mob", so to speak; but, if he was clever, he could rescue Joseph later.
When Joseph finally got there, they stripped off his precious "coat of many colors" that his father had made for him as a gift. Then, they threw him into a pit that had dried up. Then, as if nothing had happened, they sat down to eat.
I'm sure Joseph was terrified. His worst nightmare was coming true. The hurt he felt must have been enormous. He was stuck in a dark, empty well with no way out -- and he had yet to learn how much his brothers really hated him. In their jealousy, they couldn't see there faults. They didn't care about honoring God, or their father. The only right thing they did in this whole operation was keep him alive.
As the brothers ate, they looked up to see Ishmaelites going to Egypt with goods to trade. As Joseph cried from the well for mercy, Judah grinned as an idea suddenly struck him: "What good will it do us to kill Joseph? Let's sell him to our cousins, the Ishmaelites. He is our brother; Reuben is right. We shouldn't kill him."
However, before they could carry out their plan, a band of Midianites (also cousins) passed by the pit and heard Joseph's screams. They pulled him out and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for $2,500.00 (in today's currency, that is how much it came to).
When Reuben got to the pit, planning to do what the Midianites did, Joseph was already gone. "Oh no. What am I going to do now?" he thought.
Well, the brothers still had the coat that Joseph wore. They killed a newborn baby goat (because that would be easy to hide from his father. They could always say the nanny had miscarried), and they smeared it's blood on the coat. (Good thing for them that DNA testing hadn't been invented yet). They took the coat to their father, telling him that they had found his coat, but hadn't seen Joseph. This led Isaac to believe that his son had been killed by a wild animal.
Jacob/Israel was heartbroken. He mourned hard for Joseph and no one could comfort him. He vowed that he would mourn for Joseph until the day he died. Can you imagine the darkness of the guilt that his other sons eventually had to live with?
The Midianites sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites. The Midianites, remember, are also descended from Abraham, through a son by Abraham's second wife Keturah, after Sarah had died (Genesis 25:1,2) They sold Joseph to Potiphar, who just happened to be the Captain of the Guard for Pharoah, the king of Egypt. This sin did not only occur among Joseph's brothers, it occurred among his kinsmen, his cousins who did not know him.
Note: This is the first time I really noticed that his brothers did not sell him into slavery as I have been taught. The Bible clearly says that the Midianites pulled him out before they could carry out their plan. Oh yes, they were still guilty because of their intention, but they didn't actually commit the crime. (Read Matthew 5:20-30 to understand this further)

New Christian Connection: Mission America Coalition
The Mission America Coalition (MAC) is an alliance of leaders in evangelism and discipleship who have prayerfully come together to mobilize the Church to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ in deed and word.
Born in 1995 as the United States' Committee of the global Lausanne Movement, the Mission America Coalition has had high level involvement from 81 denominations, over 350 ministry organizations, dozens of national ministry networks, hundreds of citywide collaborations, and now over 600 individual evangelism leaders.
The newest initiative of the Coalition, quickly becoming a movement in the Church, is LOVE2020. It’s vision is that EVERY person in America have the opportunity to be authentically loved by at least one committed follower of Jesus Christ within this decade.
